Strategies for Coping with Two of the Hidden Risks of a Small Business

2/2/2012 5:55:28 AM
Texas business insurance provides protection from some of the financial risks of running a small business, but insurance coverage is not available for some of the human hazards you encounter. To minimize the damage these human hazards can cause, a home-based business owner needs to develop a few protective strategies.

1. Friends and acquaintances interrupting your work can be a major problem. They call to talk to you and tie up your phone line, they drop by and expect to be entertained, or they even see you as a free child minder or pet sitter and offload their children or pets at your door! One solution is to set a clear time limit, and stick to it.
2. Charities wanting donations, sponsorships or other gestures of support often besiege small businesses with calls. You could give a donation to each caller, or spend hours each week explaining why you can’t give to each caller. A better solution may be to define which few charities you will support, set a charity budget, and stick to it.
3. You can become a hazard to yourself. Living and working in the same space 24/7 can blur the work/home boundaries, so that you never “switch off” completely. Strict self-discipline is the only solution to this problem.

Texas business insurance protects you from some financial hazards that are outside your control.  Early in the life of your home business you need to develop strategies for controlling the human hazards that waste your time, money or energy.
