Understand your home insurance policy thoroughly before you start. Read the terms of the policy and be clear about what it includes and excludes.
Take notes on what has been damaged and lost, and it might be useful to take photos of the damage.
Keep notes of any conversations you have with your insurer and contractors; remember to include names, dates, times and details discussed.
Call your agent or insurer as soon as possible after the event that has caused your loss. Report the loss, and ask about any time limit for filing your claim.
Discuss temporary and permanent repairs with your insurer, who may want to assess the damage before authorizing permanent repairs.
Keep receipts for any expenditure you incur, such as materials for temporary repairs.
Use your home inventory, if you have one, to help you determine exactly what has been lost. Provide the most accurate information you can in your claim, and file it promptly.

We understand that at this time focusing on details may be difficult for you. Concentrate on filing a prompt and accurate claim so that your Texas home insurance provider can start processing and settling your claim as soon as possible.
